CHAINSAW MAINTENANCE & CROSS CUTTING (CS30)

SUPPORT THE MAINTENANCE OF TREES AND WOODLAND

TRAINEES

A course for persons inexperienced in use of chainsaws who wish to develop their skills to properly maintain and service a chainsaw and cross cut limbs and trunks.

Successful completion of this course will prepare trainees for assessment for NPTC Unit CS30.

The course requires trainees to have a good level of general fitness and medical conditions must be reported to the course organiser prior to commencement. Certain medical conditions may disqualify prospective trainees.

OBJECTIVES

The expected learning outcomes are that the trainee:

1. Understands the regulations and safety requirements related to use of chainsaws and safety features.

2. Is able to maintain and prepare for use of chainsaw.

3. Carries out a risk assessment for site operations.

4. Evaluate on site hazards in relation to operations.

5. Is able to adopt suitable positioning for use of chainsaw.

6. Understands principles of tension and compression in timber to be cut.

7. Understands correct use of safe working of bar and chain.

8. Is able to stack timber correctly.

SYLLABUS

1. Protective clothing and safety regulations relating to use of chainsaw status of AFAG 301–304-802.

2. Maintaining and servicing of chainsaw servicing air filter, cleaning spark plug, cleaning engine, checking recoil starter, cleaning fuel filter, fuel mixing, saw chain lubrication, safety and health features of chainsaw.

3. Starting the chainsaw, pre-cutting tests, basic working safety adjusting the chainsaw, chainsaw reactions when cutting, working stance when cross cutting.

4. Tension and compressions of timber.

5. Moving and stacking timber.

FELLING SMALL TREES (CS31)

SUPPORT THE MAINTENANCE OF TREES & WOODLAND MANAGE OPEN GROWN TREES

TRAINEES

A course for persons familiar with chainsaws and experienced in maintenance and cross cutting who work to develop their skills to fell small trees (up to 15” diameter).

Successful completion of this course will prepare trainees for assessment for NPTC Unit CS31.

The course requires trainees to have a good level of general fitness and medical conditions must be reported to the course organiser prior to commencement. Certain medical conditions may disqualify prospective trainees.

Trainees must already hold NPTC Unit CS30.

OBJECTIVES

The expected learning outcomes are that the trainee:

Is aware of the legislation very safety guidelines related to use of chainsaws and felling trees.

Carries out a risk assessment for on site operations.

Is aware of safety considerations to be observed when organising site.

Is able to observe and determine correct direction of fell.

Is able to fell trees using several different set felling techniques.

Correctly remove hung up tree using winch.

Is able to remove branch wood from stems using correct stance and use of chainsaw.

SYLLABUS

Protective clothing and safety regulations relating to use of chainsaw and felling of trees.

Understanding of environmental considerations.

Safety considerations when organising work site.

Basic felling cut using chainsaw only and correct technique for de-limbing.

Felling a tree that has a lean against the intended direction of fell using chainsaw and braking bar.

Felling a partially served tree that has sat back but can still be felled in intended direction of fell.

Fell a tree that leans heavily in intended direction of fell.

Cross cutting felled timber taking into account tension and compression.

Dealing with a trapped saw.
